DEAR NEW YORK, I MISS YOU

DEAR NEW YORK, I MISS YOU

New York feels like a rush of all of your senses at once. It’s can be overwhelming and invigorating at the same damn time. If you’ve ever been to New York or lived here, then you know exactly what I’m talking about. Most of the reasons I love living in the city are the exact reasons many people despise it. And I’ve come to accept that. I always tell people, New York isn’t for everyone and that’s OKAY. But for those of us who call New York home, it’s everything we LOVE and CRAVE.

Living in New York City during the Covid-19 pandemic has been something that I never could have imagined. And watching the city shutter has been heartbreaking, yet eye opening. A city like New York doesn’t often get shaken, but this pandemic has certainly taken it’s toll. I know the past few months have been difficult for all of us, no matter where you live. But life as we know it in New York may never be the same. And that’s a hard reality to face if you live here.

I’ve been trying to put my thoughts and feelings into words in order to best describe the past few months. And to explain why it’s so different in New York vs other cities. There is no doubt, that the whole country has been affected by this pandemic. But I think most New Yorkers would agree, that it feels a bit heavier here.

I’ve witnessed and heard of so many people deciding to leave the city after experiencing this pandemic. And I definitely understand why. Many New Yorkers don’t have the small luxuries that others do. We depend on laundromats, corner stores, public transportation and being able to roam free throughout the city 24/7. We often don’t have the space to give ourselves, much less a stranger to be 6 ft. away. Living here consists of constant contact with others whether it be on the Subway, a crowded street, a busy Starbucks, a Broadway theater, a favorite watering hole or simply standing online.

Our playground IS Manhattan. So when it’s unaccessible, it makes life a little harder. New Yorkers are so used to having the city at their disposal. And now we’ve had to shelter in place inside our small apartments for months. Which many of us live with roommates. And our only outdoor space consists of a fire escape or makeshift rooftop.

I myself, have questioned if I want to stay or leave. It’s hard to imagine what life in the city will look like moving forward. Especially since we’ve barely begun reopening the city, as of now. But I also know that this city is as resilient as they come. And with time, New York will once again be filled with crowded streets, honking horns, people rushing around and that electric energy we all love so much.

dear New York I miss you

When I look back, I want to remember:

Happy hours on our rooftop

Cheering for the frontline workers at 7pm

Baking with my best friend

Finding joy in cooking again

Sharing daily meals w/ my roommates

Slow mornings & fresh coffee

Rooftop Workouts

Dance parties in our living room

Late night runs to the Bodega for ice cream

FaceTime calls with long distance friends

Afternoons spent at the park

Zoom Happy Hours

…and all the other little things that made this difficult time a little more bearable.

I’m sure that this experience will always stand out over the years in my lifetime. And I want to always remember the good with the bad. Maybe this time will serve as a bigger purpose for us all. A time where we reflected more, had more time to do the things we loved, connected more with friends and family and allowed ourselves to slow down a bit.

What do you want to remember from this time? How have the past few months changed your outlook on life?

And if you’re not able to shop the sale at this time, feel free to use this post as a reference to shop from at a later date.

Use promo code: SPRINGSAVE for 10% OFF at checkout.

*Promo code is UNLIMITED, meaning you can use it for multiple online orders*

All products are shopable by clicking on the links below!

MAKEUP

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer - I love the coverage that this concealer gives and that it’s also buildable. It hides dark circles well and applies well on top of foundation or CC cream. I usually apply it and then set it with setting powder and it typically lasts throughout the day. I use the shade: CANELLE

IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream w/ SPF 50- I’m not big on foundation so this has been my all time favorite product that I use daily. It gives you medium coverage almost like foundation without the heavy cakey feel. It gives you a natural looking glow + evens out your skin tone + has SPF 50. I wear the shade: LIGHT

Tarte Double Take Eyeliner- I've been using this eyeliner for a few years now. The great thing about this eyeliner is that it's double ended, giving you a pencil and liquid all-in-one. It goes on smooth and easy to apply. And the pencil usually lasts a good bit of time.

Tarte Toasted Eye Palette - My favorite eyeshadow palette! The colors are warm, super pigmented and long lasting. I love the color combinations within the palette and the shades are perfect for everyday or more glam evening looks.

NARS Powermatte Lip Pigment - NARS makes some of the best lip products, in my opinion! I’m never disappointed by their color options and the powermattes are hydrating and long lasting.

FRESH Lip Balm Treatment - A friend gifted me this lip balm and I LOVE it! I usually apply it after I use a lip scrub. It’s super hydrating and can be used as a lip treatment or everyday lip balm.

SKINCARE // BODY

Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream - Love applying this body cream right out of the shower. It helps tighten and smooth your skin. Ideal for applying on your bum and back of legs. Although it smells so amazing, you’ll want to apply it everywhere! Promise you’ll feel like you just stepped into a tropical getaway.

Drunk Elephant Polypeptide Moisturizer - After receiving a travel size of this and using it for a few weeks, I finally understood the hype of Drunk Elephant products. My skin instantly feels hydrated and plump after application. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a new moisturizer to try. Pricey but a little goes a long way.

IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Cream - This is an eye cream I always find myself coming back to after trying other ones. It’s lightweight and goes on well underneath makeup. I usually see a difference immediately in reduced puffiness of my under eye.

Sunday Riley Good Genes - I was afraid at first of using a lactic acid on my face but this product has changed my mind! It helps improve the texture of your skin and overall appearance (helps reduce redness, dark spots, pores and even out complexion). Sunday Riley are a little expensive but they’re sooo good and effective with results.

St. Tropez Tinted Body Lotion - My go-to gradual tanning lotion when I need a quick glow. You can see a difference in color immediately upon application + color builds over 48 hours. Love using this for my legs if I’m wearing a dress and want some added color.

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Oil - If you buy ONE thing from the Sale, buy this! It’s a facial oil you apply at nighttime and leave on. You wake up to hydrated glow skin. I can’t say what or how it works, I just know my skin feels and looks amazing afterwards. It’s a splurge but you the bottle lasts awhile as you only need a few drops each application.

GLAMGLOW Charcoal Clearing Mask - This is a great exfoliating charcoal mask if you have combination or oily prone skin. I use this about 1x a week to help get rid of any buildup on my skin from makeup and tackle any problem areas or breakouts.

HAIRCARE

Living Proof Color Care Whipped Glaze - If you have blonde hair or highlights- this is a game changer to help keep your color vibrant. As a red head with highlights, my hair tends to fade quicker and this helps remove brassiness and extend my color in between salon visits.

OUAI Hair Oil - Anytime my hair feels dry or frizzy, I’ll apply a few drops of this hair oil to the ends. I’ve also recently starting using it as an overnight hair mask

Drybar Triple Sec 3-in-1 Finishing Spray - One of my favorite texturizing sprays. Also helps give volume and refresh your hair throughout the day. Great for using on second day hair also.

NEW TO ME PRODUCTS (in my cart)

Charlotte Tilbury Highlighter Wand // Drunk Elephant Bronzing Drops // SUPERGOOP! Glowscreen Sunscreen SPF 40 // Laura Mercier Blurring Primer // Summer Fridays Overtime Mask

What are your favorites to stock up on during the SEPHORA SALE?! Any new products that you’re excited to try?

15 THINGS TO DO WHILE STAYING AT HOME

Photography by Lauren Lucile Creative

Since many of us are staying at home for the foreseeable future, I know we can find ourselves caught between trying to be productive but also at a loss of what to do during this uncertain time. I think now more than ever, it’s important to fill our days with activities that can make us feel productive yet happy. This new normal is hard for all of us. And honestly, some days are easier than others. I know for me personally, incorporating more self care has helped ease my anxiety and made me feel better.

And since I know we’re all looking for ways to fill our time. I thought I would share a list of things you can do while being at home. I hope you find this to be helpful. And feel free to share with friends or loved ones also needing ideas.

15 THINGS TO DO WHILE PRACTICING SOCIAL DISTANCING

  1. Organize your makeup/skincare products. And throw out any old or expired items. Here are a few organizers from Amazon: here, here and here.

  2. Give yourself a manicure. Check out Paintbox Nails Instagram for some design inspo.

  3. Listen to a new podcast. Here are a few of my favorites.

  7. Go through old cookbooks to find a new recipe to try. Or search Pinterest for some recipe ideas.

  8. Send handwritten cards to family and long-distance friends.

  9. Try an at home facial. One of my favorite bloggers, Courtney Kerr recently posted a video on how to accomplish this at home spa treatment.

  10. Unsubscribe from all of those unwanted emails. Here is a service you can use for FREE to help manage your inbox.

  11. Listen your favorite audiobooks on Audible. If you have Amazon Prime, you can try Audible FREE for 30 days.

  12. Bake up a new cookie recipe. MILK BAR founder, Christina Tosi is posting recipes and tutorials of their most popular cookies on their Instagram account.

  13. Try a new workout. A few classes you can try at home and stream online; Rumble Boxing, Tone It Up, CorePower Yoga and 305 Fitness.

  14. Perfect your skincare routine and use all of your face masks you’ve been compiling.

  15. Pour a glass of wine and light your favorite scented candle for a moment to yourself.

What have you been doing to keep yourself occupied during this time? Have you tried any of the above yet?!

MY FIRST SPEED DATING EXPERIENCE IN THE CITY

Photography by Lauren Lucile Creative

Photography by Lauren Lucile Creative

Since moving to New York 5+ years ago, dating hasn’t been a huge priority for me. Being in a long term relationship in my 20s consumed me and I found that I had lost myself in the process. I was so wrapped up in my end goal of getting married and having babies, that I didn’t even see a life outside of that scenario. So when I decided to move to NYC, I wanted to focus more on myself and what made me happy outside of being in a relationship.

Being SINGLE has actually been freeing for me. It’s made me more aware of myself and realize what I really am looking for in a partner rather than what I once was willing to settle for. But as much as I enjoy being Single, I do ultimately want to find someone to share my life with. The hard part is meeting good quality guys. Dating nowadays is so much different than it was say 10 years ago. I mean, where do you meet guys without having to swipe right or spend your weekends at the bars?!

Which leads me to my recent adventure of, SPEED DATING.

A friend of mine had brought up the idea of going speed dating in casual conversation and I’m pretty sure my intial response was something like “sure”. But after she approached me again about it I figured, what the hell? After all, I’m not meeting any men at my local Trader Joes.

Ater a week of back and forth, we decided on a date and time to try a local speed dating event in the city hosted by NY MINUTE DATING. This particular event was geared toward 30s and 40s professionals and would take place on a Friday night from 7-9pm.

HOW IT WORKS:

Cost: $35 paid online prior to event

Location: Local Hotel Bar in the city (varies depending on event type)

Duration: 2 hours total including a 10 minute break. Each date is timed for 5 minutes.

When we arrived, we were immediately greeted by two women from NY MINUTE DATING hosting the event. We were then asked to write our names onto name tags and given a ‘MATCH CARD’ to fill out with the names of each date and circle the names of the guys we were interested in being matched with.

Seating was arranged where ladies were given the chance to choose a table of their liking and remain seated during the entire event. The guys are instructed to switch to the table to their RIGHT every 5 minutes after each date.

Since it was located at a bar, alcohol was available for purchase. Although in my opinion, it would have been nice if they had included 1-2 drinks within the price of the event.

NY Speed Dating

Since my friend and I arrived a few minutes early to the event, we grabbed a drink at the bar and then decided to sit next to each other at two of the high top tables. As more women started to arrive, we noticed that majority of them also brought a friend.

After waiting a few minutes, the men started arriving. And shortly after, the hosts made an announcement to begin the speed dating.

Surprisingly I didn’t feel that nervous, and as each guy moved over to my table next, I felt more and more comfortable. There ended up being 13 dates total. Each one lasting 5 minutes, giving time for only basic questions like; “Where do you live?”, “What do you do for work?”, “What do you like to do for fun?” etc.

As we approached the 1/2 way mark, a guy who immediately caught my attention sat down and started talking, only to be interrupted by the hosts calling out a 10 minute break. As most of the other guys opted to get up and take a bathroom break or grab another drink at the bar, he chose to continue to sit with me. As we sat there and talked for a few minutes, he then all of a sudden got up and said he would be right back. Leaving his empty beer bottle on the table, I thought maybe he needed to grab another one from the bar. But after 2 or 3 minutes, the host came over to me and said “I’m sorry, your date had an emergency.” I immediately thought to myself, “WOW, he actually used that excuse?!” So there I sat, alone for the next few minutes sipping my vodka and texting my friends what happened to have a laugh.

By the end of the last date, I was happy that I had put myself out there. And even though I didn’t feel enough of a connection with any of the guys for a second date, I would still do it again. I mean, where else can you go on 13 dates in one night? Typically that would take a few weeks to accomplish. So not only did I save myself from wasting several nights out, but I also only had to get dressed and put makeup on once. WIN WIN, right?!

So if you’re looking to get back into the dating scene, I highly recommend speed dating. You never know, you may just meet your match.

Have you ever been speed dating before?! If yes, what was your experience like?

5 PHOTOSHOOT TIPS FOR BLOGGERS

7 PHOTOSHOOT TIPS FOR BLOGGERS

I am SO excited to be collaborating with my photographer and friend, Lauren, from Lauren Lucile Creative for today’s blog post. We are each sharing our tips and tricks for getting the most out of photoshoots. Lauren is a self taught photographer who has an eye for detail and is not afraid to get creative when it comes to getting ‘THE SHOT’! And as a blogger, I’ve learned from trial and error when it comes to capturing the perfect photo(s) for a blog post or social media.

I first met Lauren back in January of this year, after she reached out to me via Instagram. A few days later, we met for coffee in SoHo to chat in person and do a test shoot. We ended up sitting inside Pietra Noilta for about an hour and then Lauren snapped a few photos of me outside the very instagramable pink cafe. We immediately hit it off and I remember leaving their that day, feeling excited about the pictures we had just taken. Lauren sent me the photos later that same day and I was instantly impressed by her talent in capturing my personality as well as her editing skills. Not to mention, her quick turnaround time. We ended up chatting over the next week and decided to schedule an hour photoshoot for February. From that day on, we became fast friends and have gone on to do several more photoshoots.

Admittedly, I was a little reluctant at first to hire a professional photographer. A few reasons being: 1) The cost. 2) Fear of being judged for not being a seasoned blogger who was comfortable in front of the camera. 3) I wasn’t initially convinced that I needed professional level photos as an up and coming blogger. But after working with a professional (aka Lauren) a couple of times, I quickly realized the impact that professional photos had. The images were definitely better quality compared to using my iPhone camera. The sizing of the images were perfect for my social media channels as well as for blog posts. And since Lauren edits all the images, it has helped me to create an aesthetic with all of my images that I use for social media (especially Instagram). Which in the end, saves me so much time and money from using editing apps and doing it myself. I have also noticed a higher engagement rate on social media when posting the professional photos. And as a content creator, brands often prefer to have campaigns shot with a professional camera. So overall, it’s been one of the best investments hiring Lauren to take my photos.

My confidence is also been something that has improved significantly with each photoshoot. Before, I would see photos of myself and pick apart every aspect of what I didn’t like. Especially being a curvy woman, I tend to be really hard on myself if I see an angle or pose that isn’t flattering. But overtime, I have learned what my best angles are, how to pose with my body type and how to just have fun in the moment during shoots. Looking back over the year, I can definitely see the growth in my photos with how much more comfortable I am. So much so, that I recently framed two 8x10 prints from Lauren and I’s most recent photoshoot and hung them in my bedroom. A year ago, I wouldn't have had the confidence to display full body photos of myself anywhere in my apartment.

And after working together for the better part of 2019, Lauren and I decided that we should put our knowledge together and create a reference guide for both Bloggers and Photographers to utilize. Below I’ll be sharing my tips for bloggers to get the most out of your photoshoot. Then make sure to head over to Lauren’s site to read her tips and download her style guide (included in her blog post) for your next photoshoot!

Tips for Bloggers:

  1. Try on outfits ahead of time. Once you’ve chosen your outfits that you want to wear for the shoot, go ahead and try them on. Especially if you’ve chosen to buy new clothes that you’ve never worn before. Also make sure to Include accessories, shoes and makeup to coordinate. Then take a photo of yourself to make sure that you like how the outfit looks and fits on you. This will help give you a visual of what everything looks beforehand and give you time to make any edits before the day of the photoshoot.

  2. Practice posing. I can’t recommend this enough especially if you’re new to working with a photographer. It’s much harder than it looks when you have to start standing in front of the camera. You’re worried about which angle is being shot, how your hair looks, if your lipstick is smudged, all while trying to walk with props in hand and trying to not look awkward doing so. It may seem so much easier seeing other bloggers in their photos pose “perfectly”. But chances are, they have mastered their pose(s) over time. My advice is to get in front of a mirror and practice walking, find your best angles and pose in different positions until you feel comfortable. You can also set up your phone to record a video while you practice posing and play it back to see how it looks. Trust me, if you get in front of a camera and feel awkward, it will show in your photos.

  3. Select location & map it out. I always like to visit the location of the photoshoot prior to the actual shoot day (if time allows). This helps me to get a visual of different backgrounds I want to capture in my photos. If shooting multiple outfits, I’ll also make notes of which outfits I want to wear according to the different spots I find. This not only puts me at ease the day of the shoot by having a plan in place, but also saves so much time when shooting while allowing some room for creativity. I never have to stop and search for the next spot to take photos during the photoshoot. Once I have everything planned out, I’ll type it up in a phone note and send to Lauren ahead of time. This way we both go into the session knowing what to expect. And because I’m very TYPE A…I’ll also write out a more detailed list to have with me the day of the shoot. I prefer to write everything out on paper with location(s), outfit changes, campaign specifics that I need to capture in photos and any other helpful details to keep me on track during the photoshoot. It can often get hectic with trying to do everything once you’re on site. And having a list to reference helps ensure you get the most out of your time and your photographer’s time.

  4. Save photos on Instagram or Pinterest for inspo. Whenever I’m scrolling through social media and see photos that inspire me for an upcoming photoshoot, I’ll save them to my phone. Then I’ll send them to Lauren ahead of time or show her on day of shoot. It’s helpful to give a visual of what I’m trying to capture. But also keeping in mind that you shouldn’t expect it to come out exactly the same, nor should you want to 100% replicate someone else's work. So many things go into creating a photo and so many factors affect the outcome of a picture (weather, crowds, construction, store closing, other nyc things). But sometimes it’s nice to use other images as inspo and then put your own spin on it. You always want to be unique and showcase your personality in your photos.

  5. Communicate with your photographer. It’s important to be open and upfront about any concerns or questions you have. Discuss what your best angles are, things you may want to hide or conceal in photos, what you’re trying to convey with your photos, what content your photos will be used for, etc. This will help your photographer have a better idea of what your expectations are and how they can capture the best shots of you.

Lastly, have FUN!! On the day of the shoot, go into it prepared and open minded. And don’t be afraid to be playful! Sometimes the most unexpected shots become the best ones overall.

PRO TIP:

Invest in a Pop-Up Pod (portable changing tent). Some photographers may provide this for you. However, I highly suggest getting one to have for yourself. It’s a lifesaver when it comes to changing outfits in public. Especially since there isn’t always a public restroom available when on location at your photoshoot. Another time saving tip!

Here is a look at some of my personal favorites from Lauren and I’s photoshoots over the past year!

WHOLE 30: HOW TO PREP + WHAT TO KNOW + WHY IT WORKS

WHOLE30

I'm not usually one for diet fads or meal plans, but after seeing several friends give Whole30 a try and find success. I became intrigued. Two years ago, in preparation of being MOH in my best friend’s Wedding, I did my first round of Whole30. I remember it being hard in the beginning and feeling frustrated 1/2 way through. I realized that I was maybe carb loading too much on bananas, sweet potatoes etc. I also made the mistake of thinking that I could substitute meals for Whole30 approved Rx Bars and Larabars.. When they are supposed to only be used for “emergency snacks”. I stopped eating protein bars all together and substituted eggs and berries instead for breakfast. And in the very last week of my first round, I started to feel GREAT. I had more energy, I was sleeping better and I lost 8-10lbs total. But most importantly, I just felt good overall. I looked at food differently, I started to be more conscious of reading labels and I even adopted some of the Whole30 habits into my lifestyle well after I had completed the 30 days. It was definitely the first time I felt that I had found a program that worked for me.

I have always struggled with my weight. And I’ve done all the diets, taken all the pills, drank the shakes and starved myself through the years. But Whole30 isn’t a DIET. It’s a reset for your body. And in the end, you learn how your body reacts to certain foods by reintroducing them after the 30 days. For me, I realized that dairy was a huge culprit for making me feel bloated and causing my skin to breakout. Although I haven’t gone completely dairy free, I have eliminated a lot of it from my diet. And I feel so much better without it.

Last year, I completed another round of Whole30 and found it to be a little easier the second time around. And I’m now currently on Day 14 of my third round of Whole30. So far, this round has been the easiest. I think due to the fact that I know more of what foods I can eat, which brands to buy and I now have some go to recipes that I love. However, I’m still learning daily on what foods are best and how my body reacts to the changes. I’ve learned to have patience with the process while completing the program and to pay more attention to what I’m putting in my body.

So with having done a few rounds now, I wanted to share what I’ve learned and give a little insight on what to expect if you’re wanting to try Whole30.

whole30

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING WHOLE30:

  • It will require you to make multiple trips to the grocery store each week.

  • You will need to read labels on EVERYTHING until you get familiar with brands/items that are Whole30 compliant.

  • You don’t have to be a master chef, but you will have to cook often.

  • You will feel worse before you feel better. Give your body time to adjust and detox the sugar. It’s 30 days for a reason.

  • You will have to make adjustments to your social life in order to be successful on this program.

  • You will also need to allow extra time in your day/week/month to plan and prep for meals.

WHY I THINK IT WORKS DIFFERENTLY FROM OTHER PROGRAMS:

  • It changes your way of thinking about food. Making you more aware of what you’re putting in your body.

  • You will gain more energy.

  • You will get better sleep.

  • You will feel less foggy and more focused.

  • You will crave less sugar overtime.

  • Your body will get a chance to reset / detox.

  • You don’t have to count calories or keep track of food.

  • Weightloss (although this is not the main reason to complete this program)

  • It helps you to make concious changes to your eating habits longterm even after you complete the 30 days.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR FIRST ROUND:

  • Clean out your fridge and pantry of any non Whole30 approved foods to resist temptations.

  • Search Pinterest or Whole30.com for recipes to start meal planning.

  • Find recipes that will keep you interested and that you’ll commit to making.

  • Read up on the program on Whole30.com. There are tons of recipes and resources.

  • Make a grocery list of Whole30 items you plan to purchase from local grocery store, Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s (It may require you to shop multiple stores)

  • Notify Friends/Family for added support and accountability.

  • Plan ahead for any social events you have upcoming. (Work dinners, Travel, Girls Night, Baby/Wedding Shower etc.) Make sure you can stay on track but still enjoy being social.

WHAT I’VE LEARNED AFTER DOING 2 ROUNDS OF WHOLE30:

  • Your body needs 3 proper balanced meals a day. (I’m still working on this.)

  • Don’t substitute Rx and Larabars for a meal. Only use as needed for snacks.

  • HYDRATE. Drinking water is important.

  • NO alcohol + less eating out = saving money $

  • Cooking meals doesn’t have to be complicated.

  • Change up your meals weekly so you don’t get bored.

  • The more you plan ahead, the easier it will be to maintain every day.

  • If out with friends who are drinking, order a sparkling water in a wine glass with a lemon/lime wedge. It helps a little to feel like you’re not missing out. And you won’t have a hangover.

  • After the first round, it gets easier. You now know what to buy, what to cook and don’t feel like you’re constantly craving certain foods as much.

  • The amount of weight you may loose varies. Don’t get caught up on the weightless part of it.

  • Don’t compare others results to yours. Everyone’s BODY is different. Finish out strong and I promise you will notice a difference by the end.

A few challenges I faced in the beginning, was having to give up my sugary coffee creamer and having to cook most of my meals. I now use an almond milk/coconut cream based creamer all the time. And when ordering coffee out, I always order with almond milk or coconut milk. Sometimes I’ll add 1 pump of Sugar Free vanilla or seasonal flavor. Cooking has actually become something that I enjoy. And I’ve learned that meals can be simple and yet really delicious. The other thing I was afraid of having to “give up” was condiments. I love condiments and I cannot lie! But to my surprise, there are lots of Whole30 approved condiments that taste just as good, that I keep in my fridge even when I’m not on Whole30.

So even if you think that you will miss out on certain foods, know that overtime you will adjust and find healthier options to feed your body. It’s all about creating better habits. And that is the biggest takeaway for me.

5 BEAUTY PRODUCTS WORTH TRYING: JANUARY

5 BEAUTY PRODUCTS WORTH TRYING: JANUARY

Today on the blog, I’m bringing back the series “5 Beauty Products Worth Trying”. I plan to post this monthly. Now days with so many products on the market, it can be hard deciding which ones are worthy of spending your money on. So, each month I’ll be testing and trying out 5 beauty products and giving you my honest opinion of them. This way you can hopefully find some new products to try for yourself or recommend for a friend. And if you have any products you want me to test out, let me know in the comments below and i’ll add them to my list to review. I want this to be a resource for YOU. Any feedback is welcomed!

Here are 5 beauty products from this month that have become part of my beauty & skincare routine.

5 BEAUTY PRODUCTS WORTH TRYING: JANUARY

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Facial Oil

I’ve been using a sample size version this facial oil on and off for the past year. For Christmas, I was gifted a full size bottle and I have been using it every night as part of my skincare routine. It smells amazing due to the lavender essential oil, which also makes for a relaxing way to help fall asleep. Apply 1-3 drops of this on your skin overnight and you wake up with smoother, more hydrated skin. At first I was hesitant to use an oil on my naturally sensitive, oily skin, however it absorbs quickly and has given life to my skin lately.

Drunk Elephant Polypeptide Moisturizer

I know understand the hype behind this brand. I picked up a sample size of this moisturizer at Sephora in early December and was pleasantly surprised once I started using it. This moisturizer is a little thicker than I typically am used to, but it absorbs quickly and gives your skin hydration + makes it feel and look plump. It also helps with fine lines and wrinkles. And I love that it’s made with protein, which helps restore your skin. I’ll be restocking this product and continuing to use it during Winter months.

Caudalie Vinoperfect Serum

I struggle with redness on my face (mainly on my cheeks). A friend gifted me a travel size bottle of this serum and I’ve been hooked ever since. I noticed a huge difference in my skin even after a few uses. It almost immediately calms down the redness and evens out my skin tone. It’s also known to correct dark spots. I apply it in the morning under my moisturizer or at nighttime after cleansing my face. It’s lightweight, has little to no scent and is a milky consistency that feels great on your skin. I’ll definitely be purchasing a full size of this product.

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer

After using the same concealer for awhile, I recently was recommended this one while shopping at Sephora. I love the coverage that this concealer gives and that it’s also buildable. It hides dark circles well and applies well on top of foundation or CC cream. I usually apply it and then set it with NYX setting powder and it typically lasts throughout the day. I use the shade: CANELLE

Maybeline Brow Define + Fill Duo

This has been my go to brow pencil for 5+ years. It’s dual ended with a powder on one end (to fill in brows) and a pencil on the other end (for outlining). My natural eyebrows are blonde and almost non-existent, and this is the only brow pencil that gives me natural looking brows. And I’ve tried several different brands, both drugstore and high end. I fill in my brows every morning and I rarely have to touch them up (unless in water). I use the shade: AUBURN.

What products have you tried lately that you love?!

37 THINGS I'VE LEARNED IN 37 YEARS

37 THINGS I'VE LEARNED IN 37 YEARS

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! 🥂🍾 Although this will be my first post of the new decade, I’ve actually been working on this one for a few weeks now. I recently turned 37 (December 10th) and honestly I’m still trying to figure out how I feel about this new year of life. It’s one of those ages where you really start to feel your age; mentally, emotionally & physically. And although I’ve mostly enjoyed my 30s, I’m learning that there is so much that this decade brings. With each new year of my 30’s, I’ve learned more and more about myself, friendships, relationships and what I want for my future self.

I’ve shared some lessons learned in my 30s in previous blog posts. You can read them here and here.

  1. Confidence comes in waves but it definitely grows the older you become.

  2. Friendships will change due to marriage, babies, careers, distance and time.

  3. Go to therapy. Whether you have things in your past you want to resolve or you just want to be a better version of yourself. Investing in your mental health is so important.

  4. Travel as often as you can. Whether it be solo, with a significant other or with friends.

  5. Talk to your parents more. They have a lot to teach you and advice you’ll need for later in life.

  6. Stop getting caught up on your flaws. They are what make you, YOU.

  7. Take more photos so you can have the memories to look back on.

  8. Spend time alone. Learn to enjoy your own company above anyone else’s.

  9. It’s okay to NOT be okay at times.

  10. Forgive the people that hurt you or treated you unfair. Not for them, but for yourself.

  11. Get your finances in order. Pay off any debts. Build your credit and create a budget for yourself.

  12. Learn to say “NO” more. Especially to the things that don’t serve a purpose in your life.

  13. Success isn’t defined by just one thing. Everyone can be successful in their own way.

  14. Don’t wait for “someday”. If it’s on your heart and mind, do it NOW.

  15. Life will throw some unexpected things your way. It will be difficult. But you will get through it.

  16. Get in the habit of asking yourself if your daily routine is aligned with your goals.

  17. Talk to your parents about their wishes for end of life care. It is NEVER too early to have this conversation with your loved ones. Although it’s difficult, It brings so much peace of mind!

  18. And then make a plan and discuss your wishes with your friends & family. Having a living will is easy to have drawn up and can be updated as life events occur.

  19. Celebrate the BIG and SMALL things in life.

  20. Don’t be afraid to meet NEW people. Sometimes we make new friends in the most unexpected circumstances.

  21. Don’t rush LOVE. Your time will come and it will be worth the wait.

  22. Wear the swimsuit. Nobody is looking at your cellulite or worried about the extra lbs you’ve gained.

  23. Stop comparing yourself to others. Live your truth.

  24. Work on yourself for YOURSELF. Not because you think it will change someone else’s opinion of you.

  25. Communicate. Even when it’s uncomfortable or awkward.

  26. Friendships take work just like any relationship. Invest your time with those who are willing to invest in you as well.

  27. Check on your strong friends. They may carry it well, but they often need your support the most.

  28. Spend the money on getting your hair cut/colored, getting your nails done, waxing or tanning. If it makes YOU feel good, it isn’t money wasted.

  29. Healing from your past is necessary.

  30. Stop wasting time trying to “fit in”. Being yourself is so much more powerful.

  31. Save some money for “in case of emergency” situations. You never know what unexpected things may come up. Or when you may need to leave that job you hate.

  32. Find things that you’re passionate about outside of your career.

  33. Make use of your nice things. Break out the China you were given, use the Champagne flutes you were gifted, drink the expensive bottle of wine you’ve been saving.

  34. Save keepsakes: cards, menus/napkins from places you’ve been, concert tickets, etc… One day you’ll want to look back on those moments in time.

  35. Be patient with yourself. You’re growing. You’re healing. You’re doing the best you can.

  36. Live in the moment more.

  37. Embrace your 30s. They are sure to be the most challenging yet rewarding years.
